This is a great historical fiction story revolving around the Civil War focusing on a family on the Confederate side of the Civil War. The book focuses on a family from northern Alabama where Hiram the dad gets sent off to war to fight for the Confederates while his wife Caroline and son David work on the family ranch back in Alabama until the son decides to set off on his own adventure with his best friend going to Huntsville where they encounter issues from the Civil War as well. When Caroline is left all by herself at the ranch, she starts to struggle with maintaining the ranch and it starts to take a toll on the family with Hiram and David being gone all because of war and David’s adventure. I really like how this story focuses on some of the family struggles that can happen during war that some war stories do not talk about often. War can also affect soldier’s families back at home especially if a family member is doing a job that can require a few people to keep something moving forward with the ranch as an example. If people enjoy or enjoyed reading this book, J.D.R. Hawkins has 3 more books in this series revolving around different stories from the Civil War as well which I recommend!
